Dear Learning Coach,
The DIBELS reading assessment is state required for all K-3 students.
The DIBELS assessment uses short fluency measures (one minute) to help teachers monitor each student’s development in foundational reading skills. The results can be used to evaluate individual student development as well as provide grade-level feedback toward validated instructional objectives.
Please watch this important Learning Coach Support training video to help you understand this assessment better. In this recording you will learn your role in helping with the assessment, how to create a great home environment for DIBELS so your student can do his/her very best, and each grade level skill indicator assessment.

Thanks for all you do as the Learning Coach!
General Directions for Parents
•It is important that we give the test the same way for each student so that we are measuring each student accurately.
•Please refrain from offering help to your student while we are administering the test. For example, don’t read words for your child or tell them to go back to fix a mistake.
•If your student loses their place on a page, it is acceptable to point.
In First Sound Fluency and Phoneme Segment Fluency you will be asked to read words to your student.
•Read the words to your student from top to bottom one at a time.
•As soon as your student responds to a word read them the next word even if the response was incorrect.
•If your student doesn’t respond within 3 seconds read the next word.
•Please refrain from offering help or encouragement to your student while we are administering the test. For example, refrain from telling them good job after each correct response.
